Necropoli Montessu
The archaeological site of Montessu-Villaperuccio is considered the most important in the entire Mediterranean. It is a necropolis located in a beautiful natural amphitheatre in which more than 40 prehistoric tombs dating back some 6,000 years have been excavated. These tombs are called Domus de Janas (the 'houses of the fairies' or 'of the witches' in Sardinian folk tradition).
In some of them, there are still visible traces of painting made with red and yellow ochre, while in others there are engraved important symbols related to Neolithic fertility such as spirals and bovine Protomes.
