The Great Mine of Serbariu and the coal Museum
The Coal Museum located within the Serbariu mining site traces the history of coal, mining, and the town of Carbonia which was founded by Mussolini. This mine was one of Italy's most important energy resources. The museum is located in the Lampisteria (the lamp room), a room where the miners prepared themselves before going underground. In addition to the permanent exhibition on the history of coal and the collection of lamps, work tools, documents, everyday objects, photographs, and period films of the miners, it is possible to visit the hoistroom, the underground galleries, and the excavation machines. Visitors are equipped with a miner's helmet and a torch to recreate the atmosphere of the mine; an experience not to be missed.
